New to the Bible?
Which Bible translation should I read?
With so many modern Bible translations available, choosing one can feel overwhelming. As the saying goes, "The best Bible is the one you're going to read." Rather than searching for the perfect translation, focus on finding one that you enjoy reading and can engage with regularly. For a comparison of the most popular Bible translations, we recommend Wes Huff's concise overview (YouTube video) or Pastor Josh Howerton's more comprehensive guide and recommendations (YouTube video).
The Bible App is an excellent free resource, along with www.bible.com, allowing you to read the Bible digitally and easily compare a wide range of translations side by side. This can be a helpful way to discover which version resonates most with you.
Which type of Bible should I get?
Once you've chosen a translation, the next step is deciding what type of Bible best suits how you plan to use it. Broadly speaking, here are the main categories:
a) Reading Bible – text only, designed for straightforward reading.
b) Study Bible – includes extensive notes, maps, diagrams, articles, and other resources to deepen your understanding of Scripture and support more in-depth study.
c) Journalling (or Writing) Bible – features wide margins for note-taking and reflections alongside the text.
d) Study Journalling Bible – a combination of b) and c)
Additionally, within each category you'll find two main Bible layouts: single-column and double-column.
The double-column layout is the more traditional and widely available format, partly because it allows publishers to produce more compact Bibles while maintaining a readable font size.
Single-column layouts, while less common, have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many readers find them more comfortable and immersive for extended reading because they resemble the layout of most modern books, making it easier to follow the flow of the text. Others, however, prefer the compactness and familiarity of a double-column layout. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference.
For detailed, expert reviews of a wide range of Bibles in each category, we highly recommend the YouTube channel and website of Tim Wildsmith, author of Bible Translations for Everyone. We love his attention to detail and genuine passion for the subject! If you're not sure where to begin, his video 4 Bibles Everyone Should Own is a good place to start.

The Vision
A Hands-On Bible Library
A place to discover the Bible that's right for you.
In addition to housing a collection of books on theology, Christianity, art, and related subjects, the Metanoia Library aspires to build the world's largest public collection of beautiful contemporary Bible editions – a hands-on library designed to help visitors browse, compare, and explore different editions in person before choosing the Bible that's right for them. Visitors will also be invited to highlight passages that are meaningful to them and leave notes for future readers, allowing each Bible to become a shared record of reflection, encouragement, and faith.
Selecting a Bible is a surprisingly tactile experience, and nothing compares to exploring different editions side by side rather than relying on online descriptions and photographs. And, admittedly, it gives Karolina, the founder of Eremos, the perfect excuse to buy all the beautiful Bibles on her wish list. After all, they're destined for the library collection! If you'd like to help grow the collection, you can donate a Bible from our Amazon Wish List.
In the meantime, if you'd like some personal guidance in choosing a Bible, feel free to get in touch at welcometoeremos@gmail.com. Karolina loves helping people find the Bible that's right for them and will happily geek out over translations, bindings, layouts, fonts, paper quality, and all the little details that make each Bible unique.
